Stone Work

What's Included

Stone adds permanence to a yard. A flagstone walkway, a low stone wall or stone columns under a pergola all tie a property together. The visible stone is only part of the job — the base, drainage and setting method underneath decide how it holds up over time.

Stone Work FAQs

Should a flagstone patio be set on sand or on concrete?

Both methods are used. Flagstone set on a compacted gravel and sand base allows some flexibility and drainage. Flagstone mortared onto a concrete slab gives a more rigid, uniform surface. The right choice depends on how the area will be used, the soil, and the look you want.

Why does drainage matter for stone walls?

Water trapped behind a retaining wall builds up pressure and can push the wall out of place. Gravel backfill and drainage behind the wall are standard practice for that reason.

Is natural stone hard to maintain?

Natural stone is generally low-maintenance. Occasional cleaning and refilling joints where needed is typical. Some homeowners choose to seal stone to reduce staining, depending on the stone type.
